Bike Tools for Africa - an appeal from Cyclemagic (Leicester)

Hello everyone.

Cyclemagic has teamed up with Essex based charity Re-Cycle to help them further develop bike recycling projects both here and in Africa.

Working with African partners, Re-Cycle sends container loads of bikes out every few weeks but there's always lots of dead space in between the bikes. We'd like to fill some of that space with bike tools for the growing number of bicycle workshops and education projects being set up all over Africa.

Most of us have old bike tools knocking around, so why not dig them out and drop them off at Cyclemagic?

We'll also be collecting at

The City Council has is asking people to donate unwanted bikes for children in care learning to ride this Christmas. The appeal is part of the Bikeability training scheme run by Leicester City Council, in partnership with Cyclemagic and Groundwork. The council has been awarded over £34,000 to give cycle training for over 800 children in care or at city schools.

Cllr Roger Blackmore, leader of the city council said: “This is an excellent idea. Children grow out of bikes very quickly so passing them on can put them to good use helping children in care learn to ride. Together we can make a lot of children very happy this Christmas”. Leicester City Council has around 450 children with foster carers, or in care homes.

Andy Salkeld, cycling co-ordinator for the council said: “We’ve launched Bikeability to teach basic cycling skills and the confidence to ride safely on local roads. We need bikes to recycle and give away so that every child can join in”. Mark Fitzgerald, social inclusion officers for children and young people’s services said: “ The Bikeability team will work with care homes across the city between now and the New Year. Having a bike and learning to ride is a life-skill most people take for granted. Young people in care have told us that a bike was one of the things they most wanted”.

Tim Hudson of Groundwork’s Bikes 4 All said: “We really need bikes for children and teenagers. Our team is working flat out to make sure we can get as many bikes ready for Christmas as we can”. Richard Page of Cyclemagic said: “ Bikeability is a child-friendly way to learn to ride. We’re providing expert training to help kids have fun, stay fit and get around safely “.
