Strategic Cycle Route Network - Bestwood Hucknall Road

The City Council has announced a new round of plans to upgrade key commuter routes in Nottingham.  The first proposal is contained in this PDF.

Pedals have been invited to take part in CRIM (Cycle Route Inspection Meeting), to take place some time in the new year and we would welcome any comments from anyone with local knowledge of particular features of this route which need upgrading.

Message from Steve Brewer:

The Strategic Cycle Route Network is based on radial, orbital and traffic free cycle routes. The aim of the network is to provide fast, safe and comfortable conditions for cyclists on the most direct route, thus creating an attractive, competitive alternative to other less sustainable modes. Existing information gathering of all 14 main radial routes has been undertaken and a report has been produced presenting the findings, this was reported to the ‘Transport Forward Planning Group’ on 7th February 2007. It was agreed by the group to develop four schemes, Hucknall Road, Clifton, Strelley and Netherfield and implement one scheme each year over the next four years. It was also agreed wherever possible to coordinate cycle route improvements with other transport and maintenance schemes. The first scheme to be developed is the Bestwood - Hucknall Road corridor (see attached plan HD/ADE0151/4/9).

The focus will be on the provision of the most direct route to the City Centre and links to key employment areas such as Clarendon College, the City Hospital and Southglade Leisure Centre. This will be achieved by providing on-road cycle lanes, advance stop lines (ASL’s) at traffic signals and upgrading some traffic free routes via the disused railway adjacent to Hucknall Road.
