It could be another nine months before a well-used footbridge over the River Trent is re-opened, it has emerged. Severn Trent Water has announced it plans to begin repairing the Wilford Suspension Bridge in the spring, with the work likely to last until the autumn. But discussions about who will pay for the repairs could delay the project even further. Severn Trent wants money from the city and county councils and Rushcliffe Borough Council towards the improvements. City council environment and regeneration officer Chris Carter said: "We have met with Severn Trent and they have reported that 95% of assessment work has been completed. "There are significant concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge, and they are proposing pretty significant repair works. "The cost of works is to be negotiated, with Severn Trent likely to seek a contribution. "But the public needs much greater reassurances that Severn Trent is doing all it can to fix the safety concerns." The bridge – which links The Meadows and West Bridgford over the Trent – was closed in July after a report of falling debris. It was last refurbished in the 1980s, by the county council.
I live in West Bridgford and used to walk across this bridge in the summer to get to Asda. I think this bridge should be re-opened so all local people can regain access! It’s absolutely ridiculous; unless there’s a good reason why this bridge is closed I don’t understand why it shouldn’t be opened again! I support Roland and Hilary Backhouse on this matter!
