Citycard Cycle Hire and Storage Scheme Trial - Your Comments Please
Posted July 3rd, 2011 by admin

Both Pedals and the City Council are keen to get comments on the City Council's proposed Citycard Cycle Hire and Storage Scheme Trial, to be introduced over the next year.
The aim of this scheme, using special Pashley bikes, as shown in the pictures, is to promote the use of bikes in combination with public transport, particularly focusing on more employment areas where current cost pressures make the provision of bus services less economic.
The bikes, based at a series of hubs, such as the Broad Marsh bus station, which serve several local employment areas, would be available for hire by people with Citycards, and there would also be opportunities for people who preferred to use their own bikes in combination with buses, for longer journeys. The public transport hubs would all be located close to major employment areas (outside the city centre) and most of these are to be found in the flatter south and west sides of Nottingham, where the cycle network is most developed.
Having good cycle access, as well as secure bike storage, is vital. Users would need to book a bike in advance and security would be helped by having details on the Citycards database.
The current proposal is that:
- This will in the first instance be restricted only to Citycard Cycle Club members who have placed a returnable deposit (probably £100). Any resident, not just Nottingham City residents, can have a Citycard.
- Any person with valid pre-paid public transport ticketing on their Citycard will be able to use the cycles free of charge. Others will be charged a fee of £1 per day.
- It is hoped to make hire more flexible and open to other users at a later date, subject to funding, staff availability and the success of the first stage of the scheme.
